Duration of Measurement:

  • BMR requires 24 hours of rest and an overnight fast.
  • RMR requires only a 15-minute relaxation.

  • BMR does not calculate calories used for food digestion
  • RMR calculates calories burned during digestion

  • BMR gives a precise calculation under controlled conditions.
  • RMR is more reliable for everyday calorie estimation. That is because it shows the typical state of the body, including digestion.

 

How to Calculate Resting Metabolic Rate?

You can calculate the RMR by using one of the equations mentioned below.

1. Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation

Men: RMR = 5 + (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years)

Women: RMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161

 

2. Harris-Benedict Equation

Men: RMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) − (5.677 × age in years)

Women: RMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age in years)

 

Example of RMR calculation using the Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation

Given,

Age= 30 years

Sex= Female

Weight: 70 kg

Height= 165 cm

 

So, RMR = (10 × 70) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 30) − 161
                = 700 + 1031.25 − 150 − 161
                = 1420.25 kcal/day
