Determine the volume of gravel required for construction, landscaping, or driveway projects. Easily calculate how much gravel you need for driveways, patios, and landscaping. Use our Free Gravel Calculator by tons, square feet, or square meters. Works with pea gravel too.
The calculator operates by converting physical dimensions into volume and then into mass based on material density. Here are the primary functions it performs:
The tool is not limited to simple rectangles. It uses a dynamic input system to calculate the surface area based on three different scenarios:
Total Area: Direct input for pre-calculated or irregular shapes.
Rectangular Areas: Uses the formula $Length \times Width$.
Circular Areas: Uses the geometric formula $\pi \times r^2$.
The calculator takes the surface area (in meters) and the desired depth (in centimeters) to find the Cubic Volume. This is essential because gravel is sold by weight, but applied by volume.
Since not all stones weigh the same, the code includes a density selection feature. It applies specific multipliers to the volume to ensure accuracy:
Standard Gravel (1.6): For typical 0.5–5 cm stones.
Crushed Stone (1.8): Heavier and more compact.
Pea Gravel (1.5): Smaller, smoother stones with more air gaps.
By multiplying the calculated mass (kg) by a user-defined price per unit, the tool provides an instant Total Cost estimation, helping users avoid over-ordering or under-budgeting.
The interface is built for efficiency, using "toggling" inputs that change based on your selection.
Under "Area to Cover," choose the option that matches your project site.
If you are filling a driveway, choose Rectangle.
If you are creating a base for a circular fire pit, choose Circle.
The form will automatically hide unnecessary fields and show the ones you need (e.g., Length/Width or Radius).
Enter your measurements in meters. For the Depth, enter how thick you want the gravel layer to be in centimeters.
Tip: Most decorative paths require a depth of 5–8 cm, while driveways usually need 10–15 cm for stability.
Select the type of stone you plan to buy from the Gravel Density dropdown. This is a critical step because choosing "Crushed Stone" instead of "Pea Gravel" for the same area can result in a weight difference of several hundred kilograms.
If you already have a quote from a local supplier, enter the Price per kg. This allows the calculator to tell you exactly how much money you should set aside for the purchase.
Click the Calculate button. The results will appear instantly:
Total Gravel Needed: Shown in kilograms (kg).
Total Cost: Shown in your local currency (if price was entered).
